The Dark Outside Returns
Christian Eede , July 14th, 2015 12:09

24-hour, unarchived, outdoor radio broadcast returns in September for another day of transmissions

The Dark Outside is an annual 24-hour radio broadcast in The Galloway Forest Dark Skies Park in Dumfries & Galloway and this year it is stepping up in scale with events taking place upstairs and downstairs of the venue housing the event.

Upstairs is The Dark Outside itself while downstairs a new offshoot named Sanctuary Lab will be taking place. One installation that featured as part of last year’s event called ‘Enclosure’, a 100 foot in diameter lighting rig, will return as one backdrop to this year’s performances which are due to be announced shortly. There are four other commissioned works for the event that are also yet to be announced.

The radio broadcast itself is not streamed, archived or saved, with all music submitted to the installations deleted beyond the point of recovery after the event “leaving nothing but a memory”. There are also no PA systems, stages or other normal festival infrastructure, “only radios”. You can find more information about this year’s The Dark Outside, which kicks off at noon on September 26 and runs for 24 hours from that point, here and here, while a list of all those who have submitted work for broadcast can be found here.
