An unlikely trio of names added to this year's Bloc weekend

Take a deep breath - having already assembled a mightily impressive line-up for this year's festival in London, Bloc have now gone one step further and announced a new trio: Snoop Dogg, minimal techno legend and sporter of dramatic haircuts Richie Hawtin, and one of the godfathers of minimalist composition, New York's Steve Reich.

Bet you never expected to see those three names rubbing up against one another at a single festival, especially not one that's typically remained strongly rooted in dance music. We certainly didn't.

Still, Reich's signature compositional sound - experiments in phasing, looped melodies and slowly unfurling, longform pieces - was hugely influential on successive generations of experimental and electronic musicians. It's hard to imagine Hawtin's tracks, for example, sounding the same without Reich to influence modern music. This year marks Reich's 75th birthday, and he will be performing with New York's Bang On A Can All Stars.

Snoop Dogg, meanwhile, is to perform a show at Bloc ahead of the release of his new album Reincarnated.

Either way, what with their move to a new site and the announcement of a line-up packed with well-known names, Bloc are really going for the jugular this year. It looks set to be quite a weekend.

Bloc takes place in London from 6th-7th July. More information at the festival site.
