Quietus Mix 32: Toro Y Moi Serves Up Creamed Coffee
The Quietus , June 9th, 2011 13:42

Toro Y Moi's excellent latest LP Underneath The Pine ought to help him away from that most accursed of titles, the Vice President / Head Honcho / lynch pin / 'node' of chillwave / glofi / digital effulgence. Here, he presents a satisfyingly unselfconscious wander through genre that takes in Madlib and obscure tickets like Ned Dohene, True Sex, Suff Daddy and so on. Most intriguing is the presence of Stereolab's 'Brakhage', for it was that Anglo-French outfit that I felt Underneath The Pine most resembled: dreamy, with a sense of great fun (one must always resist the urge to write 'joi de vivre' when considering Stereolab) and also, crucially, a sense of purpose and direction.
