Charity bid to reach Metallica drummer

British journalist Kate Spicer has today set off for L.A to seek out and intercept metal legend, Metallica sticksman Lars Ulrich. The band, currently on tour, head into California this month.

The journalist organised the trip to honour a promise made to her younger brother, Tom, who has the most common form of inherited learning disability Fragile X syndrome (FX). FX can cause a wide range of difficulties with learning, as well as social, language, attentional, emotional, and behavioral problems.

The project is to shoot an awareness-raising documentary, directed and shot by another Spicer sibling, Will. But Tom Spicer's long standing dream of meeting his hero Ulrich now seems to be all systems go. And it is the Spicer's hope that a film with such a powerful focal point like Lars Ulrich will not only serve as a great story but hopefully educate and inform people about FX.

On her blog Spicer writes: "Lars has personally given our meet n greet with Tom the nod, now it's all down to Tom to break through his syndrome and his fears, and down to me and Will to hold his hand in the right way, and for us to Little Miss Sunshine (minus the corpse) muddle our way through California, Nevada and Idaho to meet his eternal request."
