Shirley Jackson – The Haunting Of Hill House
Again I think it's one of those stories like Le Fanu's where you never know if it's really a haunting or its all in her mind. Again that's one of the novels that just really appealed to me for that reason. You're reading about someone spiralling out of sanity.

It's been adapted quite a lot. Is there a piece of fiction that you'd like to adapt?

There's loads actually. I'd love to adapt some Le Fanu stories. Oddly enough I don't think there's quite enough in them for a film. They’d be good TV ghost stories. There's lots. It's slightly about how dark can you go? Certainly on TV there's only a certain level you can hit before you have to make it a bit more sanitised. If you really want to do some of these stories justice you'll make something quite unpleasant. That's always a hard thing to ask of someone who's giving you money!
