Composer David McLean and writer Phil Carney share a trailer for a collaborative project they worked on last year at Islington Mill combining music, film and literature

In January of last year, musician and composer David McLean and pulp fiction writer Phil Carney took up residence for 10 days at Salford's Islington Mill to work on a collaborative project that will appear on a new release called Crime Scene.

Facilitated by the Samarbeta residency program, the pair worked with a selection of musicians and actors to produce what is described as a "new kind of Pulp Fiction Theatre", with the project setting out to draw the lines between film noir and jazz. The pair enlisted an ensemble of 16 musicians from the free jazz, improvisation and experimental scenes to produce the project, while four spoken word performers were also invited to take part. You can watch a trailer for the IMPATV-produced film above.

Recorded and edited by IMPATV's Jamie Robinson, the release features the full live show produced by McLean and Carney across the 10-day residency, interviews with the pair and a 32-page booklet featuring concert photography and Carney's short stories produced for the project in full.

It will be released on DVD in an edition of 200 on August. It can be pre-ordered here.
