Horse Lords reimagine a piece by Julius Eastman

Horse Lords will release Mixtape IV this May, a two-track record comprised of side-long pieces. Above, you can check out one of those pieces, a reimagining of composer Julius Eastman's 'Stay On It'.

Eastman's original arrangement dates back to 1973, and Horse Lords' interpretation swaps out the minimalism of the original for something more urgent, retaining much of the parts that make up Eastman's work, but adding further layers as well as the voice of Baltimore rapper Abdu Ali.

Eastman passed away in 1990, but his work has been given much-deserved attention of late owing to a reissue of his work, Femenine, on the Frozen Reeds label, as well as a series of performances by Jace Clayton and a live ensemble, performing parts of his work.

'Stay On It' is paired on this release with 'Remember the Future', an original piece which uses recordings of chanting protesters captured at Washington's Women's March in January. The track weaves together the voices of the band's drummer, Sam Haberman, alongside sound artist Bonnie Jones.

The record is out on May 5 and can be pre-ordered here. Read our feature with the band, published on the site yesterday, here.
