The 14th KINOTEKA Polish Film Festival returns to London this month with a programme comprising film, music, visual arts and design across screemings, workshops, exhibitions and more. You can check out a trailer for the event above.

This year’s programme takes in events across the BFI Southnank, ICA, Regent Street Cinema, Barbican Cinema, London Film Academy and more. The 2016 programme has been curated by three of Poland’s most revered film directors: Jerzy Skolimowski, Agnieszka Holland and Andrzej Żuławski. The programme also pays tribute to Andrzej Żuławski who passed away on February 17.

Tomorrow (April 14) sees a screening of Jerzy Skolimowski's 1978 masterpiece The Shout at The Barbican. As the programme puts it: "Awarded the Special Jury Prize in Cannes, The Shout is the second (after Deep End) feature produced in Great Britain by Jerzy Skolimowski. This metaphysical horror film, inspired by Robert Graves' short story, is a debate on the underlying definitions of what is considered to be normal and abnormal; it questions the boundaries between mental conditions and mystic abilities."

Also of interest to Quietus readers is the film's influence on later works such as Peter Strickland's Berberian Sound Studio, what with its Musique concrète composer principal character, played by John Hurt, and stunningly atmospheric use of avant-garde electronic sound. The screening will also be followed by a Q&A with the film's producer Jeremy Thomas, the man responsible for shepherding such cult fare as Crash, The Naked Lunch, The Great Rock N Roll Swindle and Ben Wheatley's High-Rise to the big screen. Also among the programme is a showcase of new Polish cinema which will feature a number of premiere screenings while there will also be a selection of Polish classics including 1921 silent film People With No Tomorrow and 1974’s Jerzy Hoffman-directed The Deluge.
