Neil Young - London, December 1989
Tom says: “This was shot at The May Fair Hotel, London. Neil was over doing a solo gig at Hammersmith Odeon. The show started almost like a Tommy Cooper gig, with nobody on stage. But off stage a guitar was strumming ‘Hey Hey, My My (Into The Black)’. Then on he walked and it was amazing: “This is is the story of Johnny Rotten.” Brilliant. He finished the show the same way by walking off playing the same song. Well, ‘My My, Hey Hey (Out Of The Blue)’. As you'd expect, time is tight with these cats. The interview - which was being carried out by my old chum Allan Jones - was brought to an abrupt halt in fine style by Neil's manager Elliot Roberts entering the room with a crack of the new leather trousers he was breaking in. After a couple of frames Elliott said, "That's enough." I offered that I hadn't started yet. Neil picked up a bottle of water so I said, “Take a slug." Elliott chipped in, "Don’t advertise." I had met the legendary manager in the past and had always ended up thinking, “Why is this guy standing in my way and stopping me from doing what I'm here to do.” So I offered: “Who's shaving this pig?!” With that I got the few extra frames knowing it was never going to be the best session ever, but I did get a result. Hopefully you agree.”
