Mystery man behind mix

Add your comment »

This autumn, Simple Minds and Ultravox will take their early 80s synth pomp rock on a joint tour of the United Kingdom. Intriguingly, word reaches of us of a mix of a track from both bands - a collision of Simple Minds' 'The American' and Ultravox's 'Dancing With Tears In My Eyes' - created by an unknown dance producer. Intriguing - listen below. What did we used to call these things ten years ago again?

Simple Minds have a greatest hits LP out now, and you can see the joint tour dates below, tickets here.

NOVEMBER:

27th - Hydro, Glasgow
28th - Arena, Manchester
29th - NIA, Birmingham
30th - O2, London

Brilliant was last year's best album, much better than OMD's latest and superior to anything Foxx has produced since resuming in the mid 90s. Simple Minds play much more of their pre-stadium material now, could be a great show. I hope Ultravox get to play at least 90 mins.

Hmm. Simple Minds Vs. Ultravox? Minds win; hands down. Listening to this just made me annoyed that "The American" had been shot through with filler from the wane of Ultravox's career. "Brilliant" was a knife that twisted endlessly in my gut. As much as 'Vox was my favorite band from 1980-'84, this pairing vexes me. At least The Minds have a clue and are trying. "Graffiti Soul" was a very good album that shows they understand their legacy and its relationship to the now. I was truly shocked by "Brilliant" as it was far worse than I feared it would be, and it served to sever my links with Ultravox fandom. Far better would be a teamup of John Foxx + The Maths with Simple Minds. Foxx and Kerr have been making mutual admiration noises in the press of late and Foxx is simply on fire, creatively. Benge is helping him to achieve career bests right now. No one else I admire from 30+ years ago is doing that in my opinion, though SM and OMD are fighting the rot admirably.
