Australia-born, London-based duo HTRK's new album Work (work work) is one of the year's more subtle, slow-burning affairs. After a difficult couple of years, with bassist Sean Stewart having passed away, Jonnine Standish and Nigel Yang returned with a starker, more introspective record, marking a distinct shift from its predecessor Marry Me Tonight. Live last week at Krakow's Unsound Festival, Standish's chilly vocals were almost lost in gaseous clouds of guitar and rattling, mechanical percussion. The overall effect felt something akin to dub slowed down to a glacier's pace, the decreased tempo allowing new, hitherto unnoticed things to leer forwards.

The band start their tour in support of Work (work work) this coming Monday, 24th October, at London's Garage. In advance of that performance they've put together a mixtape for us that's as swampy and dubby as their own output, and prone to subtle shifts in mood. It's described by its makers as a "nutso collection of Japanese and Spanish avant rock rarities, USA punk heroes and new Oz underground rock."
