Terry Edwards Presents A Podcast On Madness' One Step Beyond
The Quietus , October 7th, 2011 12:59

The world's smartest man on the sax guides us through music connected with debut Madness album One Step Beyond

You might well have been to see a loose-limbed bunch of ne'er-do-wells play live around the UK, perhaps PJ Harvey, Gallon Drunk, the Bad Seeds, Tindersticks, or Faust just a few months ago at the Quietus Village Mentality Stage at Field Day. Part or all of their performance might have seen them joined by a debonair Londoner, laying down some mean sax. Chances are that man would have been Terry Edwards. Since the post punk era, Edwards has collaborated both live and in the studio with a terrific range of artists, from early days in Norwich's The Higsons (alongside comedian Charlie) to those mentioned above, as well as releasing solo albums both with and without his groups, The Scapegoats. We're therefore really chuffed that this most affable of musicians has recorded us a special podcast all about Madness and One Step Beyond, the debut album from the Nutty Boys about which Edwards wrote a book for the 33 1/3 series. In it, Edwards gives superb insights into the album and what influenced it, and plays music including Bowie, Marty Feldman, Roxy Music, Dr Feelgood, Prince Buster, his own Butterfield 8 and Madness themselves. Listen below, and find out more about Terry's book at the 33 1/3 website. The new Madness box set, A Guided Tour Of Madness is out now, and Madness host the House Of Fun weekender at Minehead Butlins on 25th-28th November.
