Intriguing news reaches the Quietus bunker on this bleak Monday morning: our favourite director has made another inroad into the field of music, this time by releasing a single.

The director, responsible for such landmark films as Blue Velvet, Inland Empire and Mullholland Drive was an integral part of the Dark Night Of The Soul project with Dangermouse and Sparklehorse earlier in the year but now he has gone a step further by releasing electronica himself.

The 64-year-old has released 'Good Day Today' b/w 'I Know', through UK independent Sunday Best Recordings.

It's long been held by music fans that one of the mainly overlooked keys to his success as a leading avant garde director is his amazing skills as a sound engineer and an ability to juxtapose incidental music with OST elements.

Like his track on Dark Night Of The Soul 'Good Day Today' features the great man himself on vocals. The track was first aired recently on Jason Bentley's KCRW radio Station in LA and was commonly mistaken for Underworld.

As unlikely as it sounds the track became the subject of heated debate at the International Music Summit in Ibiza and was snapped up by Ben Turner and Rob Da Bank before it became subject of a bidding war.

The single is available from iTunes now and a full complement of remixes are going to be released in January with artwork by friend of The Quietus and 4AD lynch pin (ho ho) Vaughan Oliver.

Speaking about the project Lynch said: "I am very happy to be with Sunday Best with the songs 'Good Day Today' and 'I Know'. This feels like a good partnership and I’m looking forward to everyone having a good day today. In all my films, I have always been very involved with all that one hears. The creation of this record was a natural extension of my love of sound and music.”

Rob da Bank added: “If I hadn't just pinched myself I’d swear I was dreaming that we're actually putting out a record by David Lynch. It proves that not only is he a master director responsible for many of my favourite films but he's also a talented producer with an innate sense of how powerful music is and can be. I can't wait to unleash this fantastic record on the world."

Ben Turner from Sunday Best Recordings added: "In a way, it makes so much sense that he would make a record sounding like this due to the cinematic qualities of electronic music. But it has a sound, style and a mood that is uniquely Lynch. There can be no higher accolade for the genre that somebody like Lynch has chosen to launch a solo project inspired by electronic music. What makes it so much more interesting is that the record genuinely sets incredibly high production values for the genre. But who would ever doubt David Lynch in the world of thought-provoking creativity..."
