18. Soap & Skin - Lovetune For Vacuum
"Let it not be said that growing up in a working rural environment is some Blightonite idyll of Sylvan scenes and slabs of home-cured bacon. Still in her late teens when she wrote Lovetune For Vaccuum, Anja Plaschg grew up on an Austrian pig farm, and the music she wrote for this astonishing debut is at once dark, eery and loaded with a sublime, cauterizing beauty. Cagey in interviews, often fractious onstage, there are few hints at what inspired Plaschg's explorations of melancholia and loss here. Musically, there are hints of late-period Nico here, certainly, and it'll be when Paschg moves beyond them to truly find her own voice that we'll perhaps find her finest work. But for now, this laptop, piano and sample-created made for one of the best debuts of the year. Plus she'd have Florence for breakfast, as black pudding." Luke Turner
