Listen to the Quietus' first radio programme

We ascended the unforgiving stone flight of stairs, in all honesty expecting to encounter some Nathan Barley types riding around on plastic tractors in the Diesel U:Music studios. Instead, we were confronted by that rarest of things in the music industry (or any industry for that matter): a room full of people who actually knew what they were doing.

In fact, such was the surfeit of professionalism that it just went to further highlight the fact that we'd completely forgotten what we were doing, which would go some way to explaining why John doesn't say anything other than "Er, like, er" for the first 20 minutes before going on to claim that Krikor and the Dead Hillbilliies were a side project of "that guy who lives in a shed from Bon Iver"; a fact which he appears to have pulled directly out of his hoop. Luke got his transsexuals muddled up, but that’s hardly unusual.

But, fortified by stern coffee and aided by the excellent production skills of Lucy Pink, we got stuck into a set of mainly new tunes from the like of Memory Tapes, Factory Floor, Esben & The Witch, Toro Y Moi, Rose Elinor Dougall, Atlas Sound and all sorts. We had a moment of sheer righteousness when it felt like the planets were aligning as we played Aprhodite's Child and Flaming Lips back to back. Portishead’s Geoff Barrow called in for a chat about this weekend’s Invada Invasion festival down Bristol way, and Billy Childish cleared the line to Chatham for some sound advice on making the perfect brew.

In fact we were having such a good time that, our friends from No Pain In Pop turning up late for their show, we ended up doing an extra hour and getting the chance to play an exclusive tune from the new Hyperdub comp, some Killing Joke and even more yacht rock, or 'My Best Friend's Girlfriend' by The Cars, at least. John and Luke were so happy that they indulged in a two-cheese lunch in a cafe in Stoke Newington.

Anyway, luckily Diesel want us back and we'd be happy to have your company again on Thursday 8 October between 10am and midday. We'll be rejoined by Mr Wild Billy Childish, Quietus writer John Tatlock and two other special guests yet to be announced.

This time John will try harder not to call anyone a cunt live on air, and now that he knows he's being filmed will probably stop dancing round like a tool.
