Clarice Starling

Often a role will be recast because the original actor’s demands for the sequel are too high. (Reports that Terrence Howard will be replaced in Iron Man 2 because he was “difficult” on set just mean that he wanted more money than they were willing to pay him.) But very occasionally, an actor will have the opposite reaction, essentially saying, “You couldn’t pay me enough to star in this thing.” Jodie Foster gets a lifetime supply of kudos for not being lured back into the role of Clarice Starling, which she played to such perfection in The Silence of the Lambs. Unluckily for the rest of us, Julianne Moore was more than willing to step in; thanks to her, we have to deal with the existence of the grotesque, overcooked and laughable Hannibal.
