White Men Can't Jump
Not only is White Men Can't Jump a rare decent sports movie, it's also a rare decent Wesley Snipes movie. Ron Shelton takes the premise of hustling and sets it in the mean basketball courts of California. A razor-sharp script and excellent performances from Woody Harrelson and Rosie Perez made this film a must see at the time, and propelled Harrelson into the A-list while eradicating any lingering traces of Woody Boyd from Cheers. White Men Can't Jump is a snapshot of American life for the downtrodden and aspirational, that is non-judgemental and refreshingly human.
