Øystein ‘Euronymous’ Aarseth redefined the landscape of black metal not once but twice. The formation of his band, Mayhem, triggered the rise in Norway of a whole new black metal scene. Reverting to the necro values of the first wave of black metal bands (Venom, Mercyful Fate and Bathory) and adopting a Satanic stance, Aarseth and his band soon gathered an ‘Inner Circle’ of like-minded bands around them, centred on his Oslo record store, Helvete (Hell). He was murdered in August 1993 by Burzum’s Varg Vikernes, who used the stage name Count Grishnackh.
